How to Fix a Cat Harness?

Table of Contents

Like every piece of clothing or toy you buy for your cat, it damages over time. If your cat likes going for walks or adventures outside, its harness is a very useful accessory you use regularly. That’s why it’s important to know how to fix a cat harness in case it breaks.

There are 3 different types of harnesses:

  • H – Harnesses,
  • Vest harnesses
  • Jacket harnesses.

How to fix a cat Harness

Depending on the type of harness your cat has, the damage it could suffer will be different. The kind of fix we can take on will depend on the material it’s made of.

H – harnesses

This type of harness is less restrictive for your cat. It can move easily because there are only three points of contact with your cat’s body.

It consists of three straps made of nylon. This material is very durable but if it’s bitten or scratched it will eventually lose its resistance. It also comes with close and adjustable plastic buckles. If any of these break they could be replaced.

Vest Harnesses

The main material of these kinds of vests is mesh. This kind of material is breathable, ideal for the summer weather. If the activities you do with your cat include hiking, this material also dries fast, which is a big plus. Most of the vest harnesses available come with a single-close plastic buckle.

The mesh of these kinds of vests is resistant, but over time it will wear away. In case the fabric breaks, you can always sew it back together.

The close buckles are made of plastic. You can also replace them if they break. You will have to unsew the one that broke and sew a new one in its place.

Jacket Harnesses

These harnesses are the safest when you are looking for an escape-proof harness. They cover most parts of your cat’s body. On the other hand, there might be some parts where your cat could reach and bite in an attempt to take it off.

The fabric of these jackets is normally thick and resistant. These are the best harnesses for the winter months, as they resemble a piece of clothing that keeps your cat warm.

The closing system this kind of harnesses have are mostly plastic buckles. However, there are different models of this kind of harness available. Some of them use Velcro as a closing system.

In case the fabric rips, you can sew it back together. Make sure the seam is strong before using the harness again. It’s important to consider that over time Velcro loses its grip. If this happens, you can unsew the one on the harness and replace it with a new one.

Some Other Recommendations

Whenever you acquire a harness, you want your cat to become familiar with it. This is especially true if yourcat is an adult and has never been harness trained. The first recommendation is not to use the harness as a toy. If you do this your cat might accidentally break the harness.

When you’ve noticed your cat’s harness is starting to break, fix it before you use it again. If it breaks while you’re outside with your cat, it could possibly wiggle its way out of the harness.

You can also take a backup harness or a slip lead with you on your adventures, more so if you are taking your cat for a hike, to the mountains, places where your cat can climb trees, etc.

Remember that a slip lead is what trainers and groomers normally use to harness a cat. Don’t use it as a regular harness on your cat.The loops around your cat’s body get tighter if it pulls from the leash. Use only in an emergency and if you don’t have a backup harness.

In case you decide to fix a part of the harness that broke, make sure the fix is secure. More so if you’ve replaced the plastic buckles. You don’t want to risk them unsewing or detaching when your cat has the harness on.

The last recommendation is to always evaluate the state of your cat harness. Knowing how to fix a cat harness is important, unless it’s time to buy a new one.
