Every time you decide to take your cat outside for a walk, a hike or even to the vet, you have to be very vigilant all the time that it won’t go out of your reach and most of all, that it won’t squirm its way out of the harness. This will probably make you wonder: Is there an escape proof harness?

Cats are very active animals. They can jump and run away in the blink of an eye and their flexible bodies also help them get into small places. The sense of unease that brings the idea of our cat getting lost or hurt leads us to look for the best items available that can guarantee their safety.

Types of harnesses

There are several types of cat harnesses you can choose from. From their descriptions and the knowledge of your cat’s behavior, you can make an informed decision on which one would be best for your feline friend.

H – Harnesses

As the name says, this kind of harness consists of three strings attached together that resemble a letter H. It provides little coverage to your cat’s body, and for that reason your cat will be able to move freely. On the other hand, it has less point of contact with your cat’s body making it less secure.

Vest Harnesses

Vest harnesses provide more coverage of your cat’s body and the feeling that it straps your cat tighter than other harnesses.

This design goes over your cat’s head and straps around its chest. However, there are several innovative designs that added a strap on the neck area. This makes the process of putting the harness on less uncomfortable to your cat.

Jacket Harnesses

Jacket harnesses provide an even better fit than vest harnesses. They cover a big part of your cat’s body. To secure the straps, they use velcro, which makes fitting and outfitting your cat an effortless task.

Cats are sensitive to strange noises, so the velcro straps are something to consider when it comes to choosing the right harness for your cat.

Is there an escape-proof cat harness?

Due to the kind of straps and the closing mechanism these harnesses have, the vest and jacket harnesses are escape proof.

However, you need to make sure the harness fits your cat the right way. If it’s too big, it will give your cat room to wiggle and try to get out of it. You should be able to put only two fingers between the straps and your cat’s skin. Otherwise, the harness will be too tight or too loose. It has to fit your cat perfectly.

A harness for every occasion

When choosing the harness for your cat, you have to take into consideration what it will be doing in it and where.

If you live in the city, it is possible your cat will encounter more unknown scenarios that will scare it. The encounter with dogs or loud noises could very easily scare your cat. The harness you choose has to be escape-proof in case your cat gets scared and tries to run away.

If you like to take your cat on long quiet walks, you can choose a more simple harness. Your cat will be more comfortable and less movement restricted.

Jackets and vest harnesses might look nice and are escape-proof. However, you have to consider the weather. They are not the best option for hot climates.

Training is important

There are escape-proof harnesses that you can get for your cat; as long as they fit your cat properly, your pet won’t be able to take it off.

Harness training your cat will also help it avoid any discomfort. If your cat feels comfortable having a harness on, then it will be less willing to take it off.

Training is all about patience and consistency. If it’s taking your cat longer to adjust to the harness, you could start with a less restrictive option and work your way up to an escape-proof one.

If training isn’t working or if your cat gets scared easily, escape-proof harnesses will help put your mind at ease.
